News-Arct* | 21 October 1916 | "The Truth", Melbourne, VIC, Australia; HUBBY'S HOLIDAY. Wain Wanders from Wife and Weans. Apparently not agreeing with Robbie Burns that is a pleasure as well as a duty to work for wife and weans, William Charles Frances Sydney Wain found himself before the North Melbourne Court last Monday, charged with deserting his three legitimate children—Rita, Mabel and Edward. Ethel Maude Wain said that on August 22 she and her husband had a quarrel at the dinner table about one of the children, and defendant cleared off. She had not seen him since, nor had she received any money from him. Previously he had always looked after her and the family. Defendant: Your Worship, I went away on a holiday, and had no idea of desertion. Mr. E. Notley Moore, P.M.: You go away on a holiday, and leave your children to starve, eh? In answer to the P.M., complainant said that while her husband was away she was supported by money she got from her brother at the front. Defendant: I had no money. I could not get work. The P.M. said the case would be adjourned for four weeks, and if defendant did not send his wife money an order would be made. He would be admitted to bail in his own surety of £20.2 |
