Obituary13 July 1967 Coonamble, NSW, Australia;A former Mayor of Coonamble Municipal Council Mr Harold Walter Bassett, died in the Coonamble District Hospital on the 6th June at the age of 80 years after a long illness. The late Mr Bassett, who was the son of the late Mr & Mrs Walter Bassett, was born in Condobolin and came to Coonamble at the age of 9 years to take up residence with his parents at 'Fairview', about 14 miles on the Quambone (?) Road, marrying in Coonamble some 50 years ago. The deceased gave a very loyal service to the community by taking very active interest in all public functions being a member of the Municipal Council form about 1940 - 1950, during which he served a term as Mayor. A very active man in his day, the deceased was considered one of the top shearers of the district as well as an exceptionally good horseman and a fine athlete, running 100 yards in open company and winning many fights in the ring. For a number of years Mr Bassett operated a taxi service and later conducted a butchery business in the town, also owning various propertiess, including 'Marrayfield' and 'Wingebah'. The deceased is survived by his widow and 2 sons, Pat of Wingadie St and Len of Sydney, one predeaceasing him. Also mourning his loss are 2 sisters and 2 brothers, Hedley and Les, 2 brothers predeceasing him some years ago. Former Aldermen of the Council Messrs. W. Greene, C. Fugar, W. Wilson and E Canham, all members of the council with the deceased, carried out duties of Pall bearers. The Funeral service was conducted at the Church of England Church Coonamble on Saturday 8th June. Rector A. P. Reeder officiated. The Cortege moved to the Church of England portion of the Coonamble Cemetery for the interment.7
