Death* | 16 November 1930 | Calarie, Forbes, NSW, Australia; MRS. LYDIA BROOM There passed away on Sunday after noon of the 16th inst., at the residence of her daughter (Mrs. Steve Clothier) at Calarie, Forbes, Mrs. Lydia Broom, of Derriwong, Condobolin, one of the pioneers of the Lachlan. Deceased had attained the grand old age of 89 years. For a number of years past she had been an acute sufferer of rheumatism and unable to leave her bed. Otherwise her health and faculties were of the best until the end, which came very peacefully and suddenly. Her remains were brought to Condobolin on the Monday and interred in the Church of England portion of the local cemetery, the Ven Archdeacon Neild reading the last sad rites. Born at Penrith, the late Mrs Broom came to these parts, per bullock dray, when quite a girl (about 74 years ago) and had resided in the Lachlan Valley, between Forbes and Condobolin, ever since. She was one of the first white women on the Lachlan. The deceased leaves a very wide circle of friends and relatives to mourn their loss. The relatives include three sons (Mr. E. and J. R. Broom, of Derriwong, and Mr. E. A. Broom, of Sydney, and two daughters, (Mesdames Clothier and Dukes, of Forbes. The grand and great children number 82, and there are two children in the fifth generation. Her husband, John Broom, predeceased her 32 years ago, and he was also buried in the local cemetery.4 |
