News-Arct* | 13 June 1872 | "The Maitland Mercury", Maitland, NSW, Australia; FATAL ACCIDENT—A very sad accident happened on Monday afternoon in a block claim off No 1 Happy Valley, by which a young man, about twenty eight years old, by the name of Thomas Field, met with a shocking death. The shaft, we learn, is about 140 feet in depth, and Field attempted to lower himself to the bottom by means of the second rope. It is said that he supposed there was a bucket attached to the rope that would ascend as be descended on the other; but there was no bucket, and by come means he lost his hold upon the ascending rope, and went to the bottom in a run We are informed that his neck was dislocated, and both legs fractured, and his body otherwise frightfully mutilated. He was taken up quite dead. It is said that he was a native of the Nepean, but of late years has been residing on the Lachlan and at Grenfell, where he has many relatives. For some time he was with Mr. Strickland, at Bundaburra, on the Lachlan. He was a married man, and leaves a young widow and one child. Field has been at Gulgong about seven months, and at one time bad a claim on the Star lead. He had only been three or four days in the claim when he lost his life.- Gulgong Argus.5 |
