Death* | 18 December 1845 | Wainfleet, Lincolnshire; WAINFLEET.-On Thursday the 18th inst., three men, named Isaac Carter, Edward Holland, and Joseph Holland, (the two latter brothers) ventured off this coast, in an open boat, for the purpose of collecting gravel. On their return with the tide, between 5 and 6 o’clock at night, the wind blowing a complete hurricane, and the sea being very tempestuous, just as they were entering the mouth of Wainfleet haven, where the sea had cut a new channel or creek, and the breakers were running 10 feet above their heads, their frail bark was swamped, and all three perished. The last time they were perceived, one of the brothers was bailing the boat, and the other brother was throwing the gravel overboard, to lighten her, while Carter stood at the helm. The two brothers being members of the Forrester’s Club their remains were followed to their resting-place by the brethren of that order, and a large concourse of people attended to witness the ceremony.4 |
