News-Arct*16 August 2010 Dubbo, NSW, Australia;
The partner of David “Curly” Jones has slept by his bedside in the intensive care unit of a Sydney hospital every night since he was struck by a vehicle and suffered life threatening injuries in Dubbo on Friday.
Mr Jones was walking from the West Dubbo Bowling Club to his home across the road when he was hit by a Holden commodore ute about 8.15pm.
After spending the night at Dubbo Base Hospital he was airlifted to St George’s Hospital on Saturday morning where he underwent surgery and yesterday
remained in a critical but stable condition.
From his bedside, partner Debbie Foyster sent a message out to the P-plate driver of the vehicle.
“She’s spoken to (a messenger who was) to let him know it was an accident and there was nothing he could do,” a West Dubbo Bowling Club employee said.
The 17-year-old driver was in hysterics and vomiting at the scene, a bystander said.
He was taken via ambulance to Dubbo Base Hospital and treated for shock on the night of the incident.
Mr Jones’ eight-year-old son Logan, from a previous marriage, witnessed the crash.
He remained in Dubbo with his mother while Ms Foyster flew to Sydney with Mr Jones.
“She’s trying to remain calm and just wait,” the club employee said.
Mr Jones was placed into an induced coma and underwent surgery in Sydney for multiple injuries.
“He’s on life support - the machine’s still breathing for him,” the employee said.
“They’ve stopped the morphine to see if the pain would bring him out of the coma but there’s been no change just yet.”
The incident has prompted calls for a traffic-light crossing from the West Dubbo Bowling Club.
West Dubbo Bowling Club secretary manager Rod Firth said with the residential area across the road and four hotels in relatively close proximity “we do have a lot of patrons crossing the road”.
“(A crossing) is something the council should look at because of the fact there are a lot of semi-trailers parking here now and it is becoming a concern for the motels and residents,” he said.
Dubbo City Council’s traffic engineer, Dennis Valantine said it would “probably” take a look at the area “given that there was a pedestrian accident there”.
“But anecdotally I wouldn’t suppose the number of pedestrians there would warrant a crossing,” he said.
Council said there had been a downward trend of pedestrian crashes in Dubbo over the past decade, with three fatalities out of a total 82 incidences since 2000.2
Death*19 August 2010 Whylandra Street, West Dubbo, NSW, Australia;
A man hit by a vehicle outside the West Dubbo Bowling Club has died.

David Jones was a popular member of the club and lived directly across the road.

Club staff and members were in deep mourning yesterday and said their friend, known as Curly, must have crossed Whylandra Street “a million times”.

“The club was Curly’s home away from home,’’ bowls manager Anthony Brown said yesterday.

“We were close friends for a long time and it seems incredible that Curly is really gone.

“I can see his house from my office window and I keep expecting him to walk through the front door.

“We were like brothers, texted each other all the time and met regularly for a drink.

“Friday get-togethers were always a ritual for us and we’d had a drink the night of the accident.’’

Mr Brown said his friend left the club on August 13 in a good mood after winning a meat tray.

According to the club’s secretary manager Rod Firth, Mr Jones always exited through the front gate, which was between the two bowling greens and headed straight across the road.

“Curly played a significant role in the club as a social and playing member,” Mr Firth said.

“He was involved in pennants, championship and social bowls and ran the digger’s event every Sunday.

“The accident really rattled the club and it was a great tragedy for all involved.”

Mr Jones, 52, left the club with his partner, Debbie Foyster, and eight-year-old son, Logan.

Both had already crossed the road when Mr Jones was struck by a black utility.

He was airlifted to St George Hospital in Sydney and died around 7.30pm on Thursday.

Ms Foyster stayed by his bedside in the intensive care unit and sent a compassionate message to the P-plate driver of the utility.

“It was an accident - there was nothing he (the driver) could do,” she said.

Dubbo police said all circumstances surrounding the tragic event were being fully investigated.

“That information will be provided to the coroner,” Detective Sergeant Mark Meredith said.3
