News-Arct*8 August 1874 "The South Australian Advertiser", Adelaide, SA, Australia;
The Gazette contains several notices to persons holding land on credit, charging them with having violated the terms of their agreements, and, giving them the usual notices to show cause why their grants should not be revoked. The Commissioner of Crown Lands is evidently
determined to fearlessly do his duty by carrying out the strict letter of the Act.
The cases referred to are those of persons who took up land under Strangways's Act, which required personal residence as one of the conditions, and most of the notices in the Gazette charge the persons named with non-residence, by which it is alleged their grants are forfeited. That attempts have been made to play fast and loose with the law in this respect has been well known for some time past, and non-residence has been so common as to excite very little remark. When the lands were open for selection it was notorious that persons obtained grants of sections who never intended to live upon them. Minors and spinsters—several members of one family —obtained grants, and have held them in direct violation of the law. Some of these will now find, however, that their little scheme will not work. Thomas Newell, of Rowland's Flat; Walter Thompson, the younger, of Narracoorte; Wm. Watkins, the younger, of Apsley; John Beck Dodd, of Lower Light; Daniel Mclver, of Redbanks; David Chalmers, of Gawler; Blizabeth Williamshurst, of Morambro; Annie Eliza Ryland, of Mosquito Creek ; Agnes Ryland, of the same place; August Franz Severin, of Lake Wangary; Donald McLean, of Narracoorte; Richard Cotton, of Warrow; are all named as having violated the terms of their agreements by not residing continuously on their sections after the date of their agreements, and some of them are charged with not having paid the proper instalments required by the Act, or made the necessary improvements. Another selector, Charles John Wilson, of Caltowie, is said to have been guilty of fraud under the Act, by making a false declaration before a Justice of the Peace to the effect that he was then above 21 years of age. These persons are all informed that unless within one month of the date of the notice they present evidence that they have not violated the terms of these agreements, such as will satisfy the Commissioner, their land grants will be revoked.7
