Death* | 12 July 1953 | Henty Community Hospital, Henty, NSW, Australia; OBITUARY Mr. Richard H. Potter As briefly mentioned in Monday’s issue the death occurred at the Henty Community Hospital on Sundav last of a former well-known and highly respected resident of Narrandera, Mr. Richard Henry Potter, in his 79th year. Mr. Potter, who was born at Minyip Victoria, came to Narrandera on 12th July, 1912, and carried on business as a commission agent and wheat buyer for well known firms until 1919 when he acquired the licence of the Murrumbidgee Hotel from Mr. Dan McLeish. He conducted the hotel for about four years. From 1927 on ward he was at Albury, Merriwagga and Hcnty. During his residence here Mr. Potter was a keen golfer. At that time the Golf Club did not have its own course, and much of the play was done on the flat south of the canal, the area between Ferriertown and the present site of the Ganmain sawmills, and the racecourse. He was also an enthusiastic supporter of the Australian Rules code of football and was a past President of the Imperial Football Club. Deceased, who was twice married, is survived by his second wife and a family of one son and one daughter of the first marriage and one son and one daughter of the second marriage. The children of the first marriage are Mr. Gordon Potter (Narrandera) and Violet (Mrs. Thorpe McConville, Narrandera); while those of the second marriage are Raymond Francis and Thelma Potter, of Henty. He is also survived by two brothers and two sisters. The brothers are Mr. Charles Potter, of Minyip, Victoria, and Mr. George Potter, of Warracknabeal, Victoria. The sisters are Mrs. Rose Pitt, Ormond, Victoria, and Mrs. Jessie Macintosh, of Camberwell, Victoria. Raymond, elder son by the first marriage, was lost at sea in 1922. He was an A class wireless operator on the 'Maneura,' a barque trading to New Zealand. The ship was never heard of after it had cleared Sydney Heads. It is a coincidence that Mr. Potter first came to Narrandera on 12th July, 1912, and died on 12th July, 1953. The funeral took place on Monday last, the cortege leaving the Church of England for the Henty cemetery.1 |
