Obituary* | 6 August 1920 | "The Lithgow Mercury", Lithgow, NSW, Australia; The death has taken place at the residence of his son at Medlow Bath of Mr. John Skeen, a very old and respected identity of the mountains. Deceased, who was 79 years of age, was until a few days prior to his demise, an inmate of the Lithgow hospital, suffering from bronchitis. For many years he was farming in the Megalong Valley, where he reared, a large family, most of whom are resident within the district. One son (John) made the supreme sacrifice in France. Until just prior to death the old gentleman retained vivid recollections of the early days when, as a boy he crossed the mountains with the teams drawing loads from Bathurst to Sydney. The remains were laid to rest in the C. of E. portion of the Blackheath cemetery, in the presence ofa large concourse of friends and relatives.7 |
