News-Arct* | 25 February 1915 | "The Freeman's Journal", Sydney, NSW, Australia; OBITUARY. MR. JOSIAH STRICKLAND, FORBES. The late Mr. Josiah Strickland, whose remains were brought from Sydney and interred in the Catholic cemetery at Forbes, was one of the oldest of the Forbes residents He was a native of the town, and was up wards of 72 years of age, and the whole of his long life was spent in this district with the exception of the last twelve months. His father, the late Pierce Strickland, was the first man to discover gold in Forbes, at a spot near where Fogarty's Commercial Hotel now stands. That was away back in the sixties, when Mr. Josiah Strickland was but a boy; but as he grew up in life, he too followed the occupation of a miner, and his name will always be associated with the discovery of Strickland's reef, some miles from Forbes, on which the Mary's Dream mine is now situated. As a young man, and in after life, too, deceased was noted for his prowess in the saddle, and he was probably one of the best stockman that this state has produced. For many years he owned and controlled Gobondry station, in the Trundle district, but about eighteen or twenty years ago he took up his residence in Forbes. About twelve months ago, after the death of his wife, Mr. Strickland went to live with his daughter at Walgett, but his health giving way he removed to Five Dock, where another daughter resides, and where his death took place from natural causes. The deceased leaves to mourn their loss two sons and four daughters, the sons being Messrs. Frank and Walter Strickland (Forbes), and the daughters Mrs. Morris (Walgett), Mrs. Johnson (Five Dock), Mrs. H. Walker (Forbes), and Miss Flo Strickland (Sydney). With all of the bereaved relatives a very large measure of sympathy is felt. The burial ceremony at Forbes was conducted by the Rev. Father Walsh, who also officiated at the church prior to the interment.7 |
